Polling for 11 Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is underway today at the KP Assembly’s Jirga Hall. As of now, 66 members have cast their votes. Strict security arrangements are in place for the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
To prevent horse trading during the Senate elections, the government and opposition have agreed on a 6-5 seat-sharing formula. As per the agreement, 6 seats will go to the ruling coalition and 5 to the opposition.
JUI-F MPA Adnan Khan cast the first vote in the KP Assembly. Voting continues with 66 members having participated so far.
On general seats, 4 government-backed and 3 opposition-backed candidates are contesting. For women and technocrat seats, both sides have fielded 2 candidates each.
PTI has nominated Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Mirza Afridi, Noor-ul-Haq Qadri, Rubina Naz, and Azam Swati. Opposition candidates include Niaz Ahmad (PML-N), Talha Mahmood (PPP), Atta-ul-Haq (JUI), Rubina Khalid (PPP), and Dilawar Khan (JUI).
The KP Assembly has 92 government-backed and 53 opposition-backed members. 19 votes are needed to win a general seat, while 49 votes are required for women and technocrat seats.
The opposition requires 4 additional votes to win its third general seat. Among 5 PTI dissident members, 4 have withdrawn from the election. Khurram Zeeshan remains in the race for the general seat.
