Lahore High Court Orders Closure of Educational Institutes on Saturdays Due to Smog, Promotes Work-from-Home Measures
In response to the persistent heavy smog affecting Lahore and other parts of Punjab, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a directive to keep all educational institutions closed on Saturdays until the end of January. This move is part of the ongoing efforts by the Punjab government to address the environmental challenges posed by the smog.
Justice Shahid Karim, overseeing petitions related to the smog issue, issued a written order instructing the deputy commissioner and others to issue notifications for the closure of schools, colleges, and universities on Saturdays. The court emphasized the need to tackle the adverse effects of smog on public health and well-being.
The written order also highlighted the Punjab government’s proactive steps to facilitate working from home for two days a week, acknowledging the necessity for individuals to adapt to these measures given the prevailing environmental conditions.
Additionally, the court suspended a portion of the government’s notification pertaining to the closure of gyms, clarifying that this measure was initially implemented under COVID-19-related provisions and is no longer applicable.
The court’s order includes a directive to the environment department to take departmental action against officers who failed to take appropriate measures against smog. This underscores the significance of accountability in addressing environmental challenges.
Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi reinforced the urgency of the situation by making mask-wearing mandatory across the province for a week. In a notification issued on Sunday, Naqvi emphasized the collective responsibility of prioritizing health and urged the public to adhere to safety guidelines for a safer community.
