In a significant stride towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, Lahore is set to revolutionize its Orange Line train by transitioning to solar energy. The announcement, made by the caretaker provincial transport minister Ibrahim Hasan Murad, signals a groundbreaking move in the city’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Negotiations with NESPAK, based on recommendations from the Energy Department, are in the final stages, revealing a collaborative effort to bring this green initiative to fruition.
Key components of the project involve the installation of solar panels at strategic locations such as depots, stabling yards, and stations along the Orange Line. Stubbing Yard and Orange Train Depot will witness the construction of solar grid stations, showcasing tangible progress in the implementation of renewable energy solutions for public transportation.
Emphasizing a comprehensive approach, the caretaker provincial minister highlighted that the transition to solar energy extends beyond the Orange Line train to encompass the train stations themselves.
This holistic strategy aligns seamlessly with Lahore’s dedication to adopting sustainable practices in the realm of public transport, setting a commendable precedent for other cities to follow.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the initiative expected to result in substantial cost savings. Estimates provided by the supervising provincial minister suggest that the switch to solar energy could save more than Rs 3 billion annually.
This move not only underscores Lahore’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint but also positions the city as a pioneer in integrating renewable energy into the public transportation sector. As the study nears completion, the solarization project for the Orange Line train poised to commence, marking a significant milestone in Lahore’s green journey.
