In response to the worsening smog in Lahore, new school timings have been implemented starting October 28. The Punjab Environment Protection Department issued an official notification, mandating that schools will now open at 8:45 AM, effective until January 31, 2025.
This change comes after Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) hit alarming levels, reaching a hazardous 700 on Sunday, as per a global air quality monitoring site. The situation has forced authorities to introduce measures aimed at protecting students from the dangerous smog. Alongside the new timings, all outdoor assemblies and activities in schools have been suspended, with gatherings to be held indoors.
Moreover, a strict ban on fireworks has been placed in the city until January 31, as authorities push for smog reduction. Officials advise the public to take precautions like wearing masks, keeping windows shut, and limiting time spent outdoors to minimize exposure to harmful air.
The AQI report for Lahore also suggests using air purifiers indoors and avoiding outdoor exercise. Experts explain that in winter, polluted particles like carbon and smoke move closer to the ground due to heavier air, creating a thick smog layer. This pollution largely comes from burning crop stubble, factory emissions, and burning materials like coal, tyres, and garbage. The result is a cloud of toxic particles that lingers throughout the cold season.
With these protective steps, officials hope to limit the health impact on residents during this period of severe air pollution.
