Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) took control in the Karachi by-elections for local bodies, making an impressive sweep across various seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) saw a setback, losing significant ground, including in key areas like Liaquatabad. Despite the heated competition, voter turnout was noticeably low, which was a point of discussion among political circles.
According to initial but unofficial results, PPP secured 8 out of the 10 contested seats. They won 3 chairmen positions, 1 vice-chairman, and 4 ward member spots. Meanwhile, JI could only claim 2 seats, bagging 1 chairman and 1 ward member seat, reflecting a dip in their local popularity.
In District Malir’s UC 7 Ward 4, PPP’s Asif Khan emerged victorious, securing 994 votes and defeating JI’s Ikramullah with 362 votes and independent Azam Khan with 131 votes. PPP also triumphed in District Malir’s UC 9, where Babar Magsi won the chairman position with 2,493 votes, well ahead of JI’s Noman Ahmed, who got 528 votes, and independent Uzair Ali, who managed 121.
