Luxus Hunza Attabad Lake Resort in Gojal, Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, partially sealed and fined Rs. 1.5 million by the Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the district administration. The action followed a viral video by a foreign vlogger alleging the hotel was discharging untreated sewage into Attabad Lake.
The video sparked public outrage on social media, leading to a surprise inspection by the Gilgit-Baltistan EPA and local administration. Authorities found violations in the hotel’s sewage system and sealed around 30 rooms with damaged manholes. A notice was issued to Luxus Hunza to upgrade its sewage infrastructure within one week to meet environmental compliance.
Hotel management denied the sewage allegations, stating the discoloration in lake water was caused by natural glacial silt and sediment from nearby streams, a phenomenon known as “confluence.” They claimed the waste management system was aligned with local regulations and invited public scrutiny to counter misinformation.

The vlogger disputed these claims, pointing out the hotel’s only shared environmental report dated back to July 2021. No updated reports were provided, increasing public skepticism.

The incident has renewed attention on environmental regulations in Hunza and the need for stronger oversight to preserve sensitive ecosystems around popular tourist sites like Attabad Lake.
