In a landmark event, Maryam Nawaz, Senior Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), shattered the glass ceiling by becoming Punjab’s first female Chief Minister. This historic achievement occurred amidst a boycott by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).
The session, presided over by the newly-elected Punjab Assembly Speaker, Malik Ahmad Khan, began with a slight delay. Maryam Nawaz triumphed over SIC candidate Rana Aftab Ahmed, marking her as not only Punjab’s but also Pakistan’s first female Chief Minister.
The SIC candidate’s request to address the assembly was denied, leading to a walkout by the SIC members and a subsequent boycott of the Chief Minister election. Maryam Nawaz garnered 220 votes, while the SIC candidate received none due to the boycott by his party and allies.
Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, expressed her gratitude to the PPP, IPP, and other supporting parties during her address to the assembly. She recounted her challenging times in a death cell following her arrest in a corruption case and her father’s arrest.
In her message to the opposition, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that she represents all, including those who did not vote for her. She highlighted her resilience during tough times, a trait she attributes to her mother’s teachings. She vowed not to seek revenge and pledged to serve the people of the province indiscriminately.
To win the Chief Minister election, a candidate must secure the support of 187 out of 327 assembly members.
