The Punjab government has announced an increase in the minimum wage for unskilled laborers to Rs37,000 per month, marking a Rs5,000 rise from the previous wage of Rs32,000. This decision was part of the fiscal year 2024-25 budget presentation by Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman.
The increase in minimum wage aims to provide better financial support to workers amidst rising living costs. This adjustment is expected to benefit thousands of workers across the province, offering them a more sustainable income. The new wage rate reflects the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of its citizens.
In addition to the wage hike, the Punjab government has proposed a salary increase of up to 25% for government employees, aligning with similar measures at the federal level. This proposal is designed to boost the morale and financial well-being of public sector workers, who play a crucial role in the administration and services within the province.
Retired employees will also see a positive change, as their pensions are set to increase by 15%, providing much-needed support to those who have dedicated their lives to public service. The budget further includes a notable allocation of Rs1 billion specifically for the health insurance of journalists, underscoring the government’s recognition of their important role in society.
The overall budget has earmarked Rs610 billion for salaries, Rs445 billion for pensions, and Rs840 billion for service delivery costs. These allocations demonstrate a comprehensive approach to addressing both immediate and long-term financial needs of the province’s workforce and service sectors. The Punjab government’s budgetary decisions highlight its ongoing efforts to enhance the economic stability and welfare of its citizens.
