The crescent moon marking the beginning of Muharram 1447 AH has officially been sighted in Pakistan, starting the Islamic New Year. According to the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, the moon was observed on the evening of Thursday, June 26, 2025, after multiple credible testimonies from various regions.
As per the official announcement, the 1st of Muharram 1447 AH will be observed on Friday, June 27, 2025, and Youm-e-Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, will fall on Sunday, July 6, 2025. The date of Ashura holds religious and historical significance, especially for commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala.
The federal government has reviewed and activated a national security plan for Muharram 2025 to ensure peace and public safety during the month. Measures include the deployment of law enforcement agencies across sensitive zones, monitoring of social media platforms for hate content, and the possible suspension of mobile and internet services in areas deemed high-risk.
The Ministry of Interior has also instructed provincial governments to remain on high alert and ensure effective coordination during the Ashura processions.
