Nawaz Sharif convicted 7 year jail in Al-Azizia case, acquitted in Flagship


The Accountability Court announced the verdict and now Nawaz Sharif convicted in the Al Azizia reference. However, he is freed from the Flagship Investment case.

Nawaz Sharif convicted for 7 years in the Al Azizia reference and acquitted from the Flagship Investment case. Accountability Court announced the verdict and he is arrested from the court  after the announcement of the verdict. In addition, the court also ordered him to pay $25 million.

Decision over corruption references against Nawaz Sharif announced today by the Accountability Court. However, Judge Arshad Malik reserved the verdict in Al Azizia reference and Flagship Investment on Wednesday.

Nawaz Sharif arrived in Islamabad from Lahore to listen to the judgment in the courtroom. The judge on Dec 21 rejected an application by Sharif’s lawyer Khawaja Haris to defer the judgment.

Last week, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) finalized the final arguments in Flagship reference against Nawaz Sharif. However, it is the final reference against Nawaz Sharif. On the other side, NAB had completed the arguments in the Al Azizia reference.

Earlier, Nawaz Sharif appeared before the Accountability Court in Flagship and Al-Azizia reference against him and the Sharif family. However, he trial against Nawaz Sharif and family began in September 2017.

A three member bench headed by CJP Saqib Nisar, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the Accountability Court II Judge Mohammad Arshad Malik’s petition. Earlier, Judge Malik requested Supreme Court to give extension for concluding remaining cases against Sharifs.

In August, the verdict against Sharif family is announced and petition against the suspension of Avenfield verdict is dismissed. Justice Shahid Waheed, Justice Shahid Jameel Khan, and Justice Aatir Mehmood announced the verdict against Sharif family.

High Security Alert

Security around the Judicial Complex in Islamabad is increased. Rangers and police are deployed in the city. In addition, Section 144 is also imposed to maintain law and order in Islamabad.
