NEPRA Approves Rs 2.87 per Unit Electricity Rate Hike, Bringing Another Shock to Karachi Residents

In a recent development, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has given the green light to K-electric’s request for a power tariff hike in Karachi. The approved increase stands at Rs 2.87 per unit, marking the second quarterly fuel adjustment.

This decision, which applies to the adjustment period from January to March 2023, comes with a consequential burden on Karachi’s power consumers. The quarterly fuel adjustments will now translate to an additional cost of Rs 4.12 for the consumers in the region.

NEPRA has promptly forwarded its decision to the federal government for official notification of the tariff hike. Notably, this approval follows a prior request from the caretaker government, emphasizing the need for a consistent electricity tariff nationwide.

The official notification reveals that NEPRA has sanctioned a surge of Rs 1.72 per unit for K-Electric (KE) consumers, covering the third-quarterly adjustment charges for the previous financial year. Moreover, a Rs 1.25 per unit increase has approved for the adjustment period from January to March 2023, with an additional Rs 0.47 per unit for the adjustment period spanning October to December 2022.

While NEPRA awaits the federal government’s nod, Karachi’s electricity consumers should prepared to encounter these changes in their bills from January to March 2024.
