Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced on Friday that the issuance and renewal of identity cards will soon be available at the Union Council (UC) level across Pakistan. This decision aims to enhance the accessibility and convenience of obtaining and renewing identity cards for citizens.
The announcement came after Minister Naqvi’s visit to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) headquarters, where he chaired a significant meeting focused on making NADRA more user-friendly. During the meeting, various proposals discussed to streamline the process and improve the overall experience for citizens.
Key Developments
- Biometric Machines Installation: To facilitate the new service, biometric machines will be installed at union council levels nationwide. This will ensure that citizens can easily access identity card services without having to travel long distances.
- Comprehensive Plan: Minister Naqvi has directed officials to devise a detailed plan within a few days to finalize the process for issuing and renewing identity cards at the union council level. The plan will also focus on making the Identity Card system more foolproof, efficient, and user-friendly.
- Expansion of NADRA Centers: In response to the long queues observed at existing NADRA centers, the minister has called for an increase in the number of centers in six major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, within the next seven days. This expansion aims to reduce waiting times and improve service delivery.
- Action Against Fake ID Card Mafia: The minister ordered effective measures to combat the fake identity card mafia, ensuring that the integrity of the identity card system maintained.
- Digital Monitoring System: During his visit to the NADRA operational room, Minister Naqvi briefed on the digital monitoring system of NADRA centers across Pakistan. He expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Chairman NADRA, Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar, and his team in implementing advanced monitoring technologies.
The new initiative to provide ID card issuance and renewal services at the union council level is a significant step towards making these essential services more accessible to the general public. By decentralizing the process and expanding the number of NADRA centers, the government aims to ensure prompt and efficient service delivery. This move expected to significantly reduce the inconvenience faced by citizens and improve the overall efficiency of NADRA operations.
Secretary Interior, Khurum Ali Agha, and senior NADRA officials were also present during the minister’s visit, underscoring the high level of commitment to improving the identity card system in Pakistan.
