After a 14-hour rescue operation, the body of 3-year-old boy was recovered from NIPA. The incident triggered public protests, raised questions over infrastructure negligence, and prompted government authorities to announce inquiries.
Ibrahim, a three-year-old boy, fell into an uncovered manhole near NIPA Chowrangi on Sunday night. He had been shopping with his family when he ran ahead and slipped into the open sewer. Rescue teams searched for 14 hours before recovering his body 30–40 feet downstream.
As per ARY news reports, the body was recovered by a local sanitary worker. Ibrahim’s grandfather received the lifeless child, while his mother reportedly fainted. Locals and volunteers, frustrated by delayed machinery and lack of sewerage maps, assisted the rescue teams on a self-help basis.
The NIPA Chowrangi case led to huge protests. Citizens blocked the roads, burned tires, and struck media crews with stones. Traffic police redirected the traffic to Rashid Minhas Road, Johar Mor. The anger of people over the city infrastructure and the administrative delays was presented.
Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab offered condolences at KMC Sports Complex. He confirmed CCTV footage was being collected and directed KWSC to investigate the missing manhole cover. Sindh government spokesperson Saadia Javed said an inquiry would determine responsibility and ensure accountability.
The incident was also denounced by political leaders. Farooq Sattar of MQM and Hafiz Naeemur-Rehman of Jamaat-e-Islami attacked the Karachi government and the water board, accusing them of laxity and failure to provide security to the people.
The NIPA Chowrangi incident has brought attention to the safety of manholes and city officials. Officials are under more and more pressure to prevent the occurrence of such a tragedy, prompt delivery of rescue efforts, and to rebuild confidence in the Karachi civic infrastructure.
