A three-year-old boy, Ibrahim, slipped into an open manhole outside a departmental store near the NIPA Bridge in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Rescue teams gather with limited resources. Workers told that they did not get machinery from any department.
The mother of the child cried for help and called out her son’s name as teams from Rescue 1122 and Edhi Marine Services entered the lines of the sewer. Parents told that the child stepped out of the store with his parents. He broke free and ran ahead. He climbed over a sewer opening covered with cardboard. The cardboard collapsed and he fell straight into the manhole.
His father, Nabeel, explained the details. He came from Shah Faisal Colony with his wife and son for shopping. He parked his motorcycle near the open manhole. He said he saw Ibrahim fall into it. He told me Ibrahim was three years old and his only child. The search continued as the family waited near the spot.
The grandfather spoke to the media, questioned how parking fees are charged, but manholes remain uncovered. He appealed to the Governor of Sindh, the Chief Minister of Sindh, and Murtaza Wahab to ensure a full rescue effort.
The Nipa Chowrangi incident soon turned into a public protest. People blocked the roads, burned tyres, and shut the routes from NIPA to Hassan Square, Karachi University, and Gulshan Chowrangi.
The Nipa Chowrangi incident remains under search operations as authorities respond to mounting public pressure.
