In a move that brings relief to the public, the Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has declared an end to the fee collection for vehicle number plates. This decision allows citizens to purchase their number plates from local vendors, adhering to the government-approved designs.
Previously, the registration process involved a fee of Rs1500 for motorcycles and Rs2000 for cars for computerized number plates. However, this fee has now been waived, marking a significant shift in the department’s policy.
The department’s past record shows that over 2.5 million people were charged, but the delivery of number plates was significantly delayed, spanning over three years. This led to citizens resorting to duplicate number plates for their vehicles.
The decision has been welcomed by the public, who had faced considerable inconvenience due to the delay in receiving their number plates. One citizen expressed his relief, stating, “This is a positive step. Now we can obtain number plates from the market at our convenience.”
Sources indicate that the decision was made after the conclusion of an agreement between the department and a local company. The officials of the Excise Department confirmed that the decision was taken considering the difficulties faced by the citizens.
