In a groundbreaking move to curb tax evasion, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has initiated a non-filers SIM block campaign across the nation. This decisive action is a part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure tax compliance.

Effective immediately, the SIM cards of all identified non-filers with taxable income blocked, with the blockage to remain in effect until May 15. This decision disseminated via an FBR notification, directing telecom companies to enforce the measure without delay.

The non-filers SIM block initiative targets 506,671 individuals who have not filed their tax returns for the year 2023 and are absent from the Active Taxpayers List. The process to unblock the mobile SIMs of these non-filers is not a simple one. Any restoration requests will be subject to FBR or the relevant commissioner’s approval.

Insiders reveal that this is merely the first phase of the FBR’s comprehensive plan to combat tax evasion. With data compiled for over 2 million individuals, it’s anticipated that more non-filers may face similar actions in the upcoming phases.

Notably, the FBR’s authority extends beyond the non-filers SIM block. The board also has the power to disconnect the electricity connections of non-filers, adding another layer of enforcement to ensure widespread tax compliance.
