The legal counsels’ team of former President Asif Ali Zardari have submitted the response before the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) today in connection to the Rs35 billion laundering fraud.

According to news sources two junior lawyers of the previous president’s attorney, Farooq Naek, showed up before the FIA State Bank Circle and submitted the answer.

The answer expresses that Zardari and sister Faryal Talpur will appear before the investigation after the July 25 general decision as both are running in up for general elections. The FIA is investigating 32 individuals in connection with laundering scam from a number of fake accounts, under which Zardari’s associate Hussain Lawai was also apprehended before.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership was counseled by legal advisors over FIA’s summoning of Zardari and they advised him against appearing before the FIA, sources said. PPP leaders Farooq Naek, Latif Khosa, Aitzaz Ahsan and Nayyar Bokhari apprised the former president about the case, the sources included. Further on Tuesday, sources indicate that the FIA decided not to make immediate arrests.

FIA establishes JIT to probe the case

In the interim, the FIA has constituted a joint investigation team  (JIT) comprising of seven members to probe the case and will be headed by Additional DG FIA Dr. Najaf Mirza.

The JIT incorporates Director FIA Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar, Director FIA Sindh Muneer Ahmed Sheik, Additional Director Banking Circle Karachi Faizullah Korejo, Deputy Director FIA Sindh Ali Mardan Khoso and another two deputy directors of FIA Punjab, Chaudhry Mohammad Ahmed, and Khalid Anis.

The team will have the capacity and assistance provided by the agency and will investigate fake accounts involved.

The Enquiry

FIA probe began when FMU(financial monitoring unit) of the State Bank of Pakistan produced a ‘suspicious transaction report’ in January this year.

According to FIA sources, black money gathered from various kickbacks, commissions, and bribes. But despite these huge transactions, the bank authorities never reported them to the authorities concerned including FIA.

The investigators at FIA maintains that sum of amount is black cash accumulated from different kickbacks, commissions, and influences. Yet, regardless of such huge amount of sum transacted through, bank’s administration never made authorities concerning notified including the Federal investigating agency of any suspicion thereon.

The Supreme Court has directed authorities to put the names of heads of three banks on ECL on Sunday, order followed after Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took notice of the slowed investigation process into the case.
