The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government has recently announced a significant increase in the permit fees for national and international mountaineers aiming to conquer the world’s second-highest peak, K2. The new pricing structure will apply to climbers across different seasons, ensuring varied rates for summer, autumn, and winter expeditions.
New Permit Fees for International Climbers
According to the notification issued by the G-B Tourism, Sports, Culture, Archaeology & Museum Department, the permit fee for international climbers attempting to scale the 8,611-meter K2 has been revised. The fee for the popular summer season, which lasts from April to September, is now set at $5,000 per individual climber. For those opting to climb during the autumn months of October and November, the fee has been reduced to $2,500, while the winter season (December to March) comes with the lowest fee of $1,500.
Additionally, foreign groups undertaking the K2 expedition will now pay a $12,000 group fee for the summer season.
Updated Trekking Fees for Foreign Mountaineers
The trekking fees for foreign climbers have also seen changes. For trekking expeditions, foreign groups will now pay $100 per group. Individual foreign climbers trekking during the summer will pay a fee of $300, while autumn expeditions will be charged $200, and winter trekking will cost $100.

During autumn, Pakistani climbers will be charged Rs50,000, and the winter permit fee is set at Rs30,000. Pakistani groups attempting the K2 expedition will pay a fee of Rs30,000.
Impact on K2 Expedition Planning
These new rates will impact both professional and recreational mountaineers planning K2 expeditions. The varied pricing across seasons offers climbers the option to adjust their expeditions according to budget and preferred climbing conditions.
If you’re planning a K2 expedition, it’s essential to stay updated with the latest pricing and requirements. The increase in permit fees reflects the rising interest in K2, especially as mountaineers from around the globe seek to conquer the iconic peak.
