In a recent development, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) of Pakistan has declared a rise in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by Rs1.56 per kilogram, effective from January 1, 2024.
According to an official notification released by OGRA, the revised rate for LPG is now Rs256.42 per kilogram, an increase from the previous Rs254.86 per kilogram. Simultaneously, the cost of a domestic LPG cylinder has also experienced a surge, climbing by Rs18.52, reaching Rs3,225.87 from the earlier Rs3,207.35.
The rationale provided by OGRA for this adjustment is the escalation in the international market price of LPG, which surged from $587.5 per ton to $594.5 per ton.
LPG holds significant importance in Pakistan, particularly in rural regions where access to natural gas is limited. It serves various purposes, including cooking, heating, and power generation.
On a related note, the interim Prime Minister has given the nod to maintaining the prices of petrol and diesel unaltered for the ensuing 15 days, in accordance with a proposal from the Ministry of Finance. The federal government has opted to keep the prices steady at Rs267.34 for petrol and Rs276.21 for high-speed diesel.
However, there is a silver lining for consumers as the cost of kerosene oil has seen a reduction of Rs2.19 per liter, and light diesel oil now costs Rs1.11 less per liter. These adjustments will be effective from January 1, 2024.
This economic update underscores the dynamic nature of fuel prices, influenced by both international market fluctuations and domestic economic considerations.
