Pakistan Signs Landmark Deal with China for J-35 Stealth Jets and HQ-19 Missile System

Pakistan has officially announced a landmark defense agreement with China, securing the purchase of 40 cutting-edge J-35 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, KJ-500 AWACS surveillance aircraft, and the HQ-19 ballistic missile defense system. This significant procurement aims to enhance Pakistan’s air defense and surveillance capabilities amid regional tensions.

J-35 Stealth Fighter Jets to Strengthen Pakistan Air Force

The J-35 stealth jets, manufactured by China’s Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and first unveiled at the Zhuhai Air Show 2024, are equipped with advanced radar-evading technologies. These jets are designed to penetrate enemy airspace undetected, giving Pakistan a strategic edge in aerial combat scenarios.

The decision to acquire J-35 aircraft is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to modernize its air force and maintain a technological advantage over regional adversaries, particularly India. The recent performance of the J-10C jets, which reportedly downed six Indian aircraft in a past skirmish, has bolstered Pakistan’s confidence in Chinese defense technology.

KJ-500 AWACS to Boost Surveillance Capabilities

Alongside the fighter jets, Pakistan will also receive the KJ-500 AWACS aircraft. Known for their compact design and powerful radar systems, these aircraft will greatly enhance Pakistan’s real-time aerial surveillance and battlefield awareness. The KJ-500 is expected to improve command and control capabilities during regional conflicts.

HQ-19 Missile Defense System to Counter Ballistic Threats

The inclusion of the HQ-19 ballistic missile defense system marks a significant step in Pakistan’s defense strategy. Designed to intercept medium- and long-range ballistic missiles, the HQ-19 will strengthen the country’s ability to defend against external missile threats.

Surge in Chinese Defense Stocks After Announcement

Following the official announcement, shares of Chinese defense companies saw a sharp rise. Shenyang Aircraft Corporation’s stock hit the 10% daily limit on the Shanghai Stock Exchange for the third consecutive day. Shares of Aerospace Nanhao Electronic Information Technology Company also jumped by 15%.

According to Bloomberg, this deal underlines growing military cooperation between Pakistan and China, with the financial markets responding positively to the news. Although China’s Ministry of Defense has not issued a formal statement, the increase in defense stock values reflects growing investor confidence.

Shifting Regional Defense Dynamics

The Pakistan-China defense agreement also highlights a shift in regional military alliances. Reports indicate that Indonesia, traditionally reliant on American and Russian aircraft, is now considering purchasing Chinese J-10 fighter jets. This indicates a growing influence of Chinese defense technology across Asia.

Moreover, China’s advancements in military hardware, including the recent launch of a massive amphibious assault ship and rumored sixth-generation fighter jet trials, have positioned it as a key global arms supplier.
