A recent move in the Punjab Assembly sparked a lot of buzz, aiming to put an end to inappropriate dancing and mistreatment of transgender individuals and women at wedding events. Government member Hamida Mian submitted this resolution, emphasizing the need to respect social and cultural values that are often compromised during these events. She pointed out how weddings nowadays are often marred by overly enthusiastic dance routines, some of which get live-streamed on social media, stirring public criticism.
Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, after hearing the proposal, decided to forward it to a committee for further changes. In her resolution, Hamida Mian talked about how the wedding gatherings in our society should ideally mirror cultural respect. However, it’s increasingly seen that dancing at these events can take a different turn, with intoxicated guests sometimes misbehaving, putting the dignity of female dancers and transgender people at risk.
This resolution calls on both federal and provincial governments to take a hard stance on such issues. Not only does it push for an immediate ban on gatherings that may compromise respect for any individuals, but it also demands new laws to make sure such incidents don’t keep happening. The resolution’s focus lies on ensuring the protection of all involved, especially those vulnerable to mistreatment. There’s also a strong appeal for relevant institutions to be held accountable, creating a system where complaints can be addressed effectively.
