Gujrat’s district administration has announced a three-day closure for all private and government colleges. This decision, effective from October 17 to October 19, was made due to rising concerns over law and order following protests sparked by a disturbing incident in Lahore. Adding Sunday into the mix, students will get a four-day break.
The Deputy Commissioner of Gujrat issued the notification, confirming that the closure applies to all educational institutions across the city. The step comes as tensions continue to rise, with students in Lahore taking to the streets for a second day, demanding justice for an alleged rape involving a fellow student at a private college. Despite government assurances and the formation of an investigative committee, the protests show no signs of slowing down.
The demonstrations aren’t just limited to Lahore. They have spread across Punjab, reaching cities like Multan, Jahanian, and Zafarwal, where incidents of vandalism and traffic blockades have also been reported. The Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, has responded to the situation by setting up a six-member committee to dig into the allegations and get to the bottom of the matter.
However, not everyone is convinced there’s truth behind the claims. According to the police, there isn’t enough evidence to back the allegations, and a security guard at the college has outright denied that the incident took place. Still, authorities are not taking any chances and have warned of strict action against anyone attempting to disturb peace during this period. The police are on high alert, committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and keeping things under control.
With emotions running high and tensions brewing across different cities, all eyes are on the investigation and how it unfolds in the coming days.
