In a bid to combat the severe smog crisis in Punjab, the caretaker government is considering implementing a comprehensive lockdown. According to reliable sources, the government poised to initiate this lockdown as early as tomorrow. This proposed lockdown set to encompass various sectors, including markets, schools, colleges, and factories, all of which expected to remain closed on Wednesdays. Moreover, government offices anticipated to operate with only half of their employees.
The government’s approach reminiscent of the lockdowns imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to introduce culverts during the weekend, mirroring the coronavirus lockdown measures. Smog levels in Punjab have reached alarming heights, with Lahore experiencing particularly severe conditions due to abnormal traffic patterns. Interestingly, factory emissions are only responsible for a minimal 7% contribution to the overall smog crisis. The peak smog levels in Punjab observed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
In response to this dire situation, Commissioner Lahore Muhammad Ali and CCPO Bilal Siddique have engaged with local traders. In a significant move, Lahore Division will now observe a work-from-home policy every Wednesday for the next two months. This measure has garnered strong support from traders, who see it as an essential step in the fight against smog.
Business leaders have shared their suggestions with the Lahore administration on anti-smog initiatives. Mohammad Ali Randhawa, an official, has pledged to lead efforts to clear market encroachments and make decisions that involve traders in the process. Additionally, strict actions will taken against those failing to sprinkle water in construction areas and those operating uncovered trolleys. In collaboration with traders’ associations, the administration aims to encourage tree planting and green initiatives, with a focus on public spaces.
As data indicates a looming severe smog season in October and November, these proactive measures by the Punjab government and the support of the business community are crucial steps toward mitigating the smog crisis and ensuring a healthier environment for all residents.
