Punjab Motorway Close Due to Dense Fog: Safety Measures Advised

Several major motorways in Punjab were closed on Friday morning, January 17, 2025, as dense fog engulfed multiple cities in the region. The Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2), Lahore-Multan Motorway (M-3), M-4 Motorway (Pindi Bhattian to Multan), and M-5 Motorway (Multan to Taranda Muhammad Panah) were all temporarily shut down due to significantly reduced visibility.

The dense fog also disrupted travel on the National Highway, particularly in areas such as Thokar Niaz Baig, Pattoki, Okara, and Sahiwal, making driving conditions hazardous.

Motorway Police Take Precautionary Measures
A spokesperson for the Motorway Police, Syed Imran Ahmad, explained that the closures were implemented to prioritize public safety. “Given the dense fog and low visibility, it was crucial to prevent accidents and protect travelers,” he stated.

Drivers were advised to delay unnecessary travel and opt for safer time frames, particularly between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., when visibility is better. The spokesperson further recommended maintaining lane discipline and using both front and rear lights while driving under foggy conditions.

Safety Tips for Travelers
Motorway police issued essential safety guidelines for drivers:

  • Use both front and rear lights in low visibility conditions.
  • Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during foggy conditions.
  • Contact the motorway helpline, 130, for real-time updates or emergency assistance.

Continuous Monitoring by Authorities
Motorway police are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the weather improves. Travelers are urged to stay informed about road conditions before commencing their journeys.

Impact on Travelers
The closure of motorways and the disruption of traffic on the National Highway have impacted commuters, including commercial and private vehicles. Authorities have assured that road safety remains the top priority, and the motorways will reopen as soon as conditions improve.

For further updates and guidance, travelers can contact the Motorway Police helpline or visit their official website.
