In a significant development, the Punjab government has introduced a revised fee structure for driving licenses, effective from January 1, 2024. The move, aimed at enhancing road safety and encouraging compliance, includes a shift from a five-year to an annual fee collection system.
The decision comes in the aftermath of a tragic car accident caused by an unlicensed teenage driver, resulting in the loss of six lives. To address the issue of unlicensed driving, the Lahore City Traffic Police has initiated a rigorous crackdown on offenders across Punjab.
Under the updated fee structure, applicants will now pay annual fees for various driving license categories. The shift is designed to streamline the licensing process and has led to a notable surge in applications over the past few months.
Key changes in the annual fees for different driving license categories are as follows:
- Learner: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 500
- Bike: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 500
- Car/Jeep: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 1800
- Motorcycle Rickshaw: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 500
- Light Transport (LTV): New Annual Fee (PKR) – 2000
- Heavy Transport (HTV): New Annual Fee (PKR) – 2000
- Tractor: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 1000
- Commercial Tractor: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 1500
- Public Service Vehicle: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 1500
- Disable Persons: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 0
- Other Categories: New Annual Fee (PKR) – 1000
This change is part of a broader effort to address the growing concerns related to road safety and ensure that drivers in Punjab adhere to licensing requirements. The increased annual fees aim to deter unlicensed driving and contribute to a safer and more regulated traffic environment in the region. Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and comply with the updated fee structure to avoid any legal repercussions.
