The Punjab Traffic Police has achieved a remarkable milestone by issuing an unprecedented 234,000 driving licenses across the province in the last month. Among these, 70,000 individuals opted for the convenient online facility to obtain their licenses, showcasing a growing trend towards digital services in the realm of traffic regulations.
While this surge in driving license issuance reflects an improvement in regulatory compliance, the authorities also encountered a significant number of traffic violations during the same period. The traffic police imposed fines totaling millions on over 972,000 drivers for various infractions.
Specifically, over 46,000 motorcyclists were fined for driving without helmets, emphasizing the importance of safety gear. Additionally, more than 180,000 challans were issued to unlicensed and underage drivers, underlining the ongoing efforts to ensure road safety and legal compliance.
Moreover, stringent measures were taken against lane violations and overloading, with fines levied on more than 230,000 vehicles for flouting these regulations. These actions are part of a broader strategy to promote disciplined and safe driving practices on Punjab’s roads.
Despite these efforts, road accidents remain a concern, with 282 individuals losing their lives in 37,634 reported incidents last month alone. In response, the Emergency Services Department (ESD) Secretary Dr. Rizwan Naseer has urged motorbike riders to adhere to a maximum speed of 50 km per hour in the left lane, highlighting ongoing initiatives to curb accidents and enhance road safety.
The record-breaking number of driving licenses issued by the Punjab Traffic Police reflects both a growing adherence to regulatory procedures and the challenges that persist in ensuring safe and responsible driving habits among motorists in the province.
