The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert for widespread heavy rain with thunderstorms across various regions of the country. Over the next 24 hours, areas including Islamabad, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, and upper Sindh are expected to experience significant rainfall.
Rain Forecast for Key Areas
The PMD has forecasted that heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, will likely affect several major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Peshawar. These rains could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas, particularly in cities like Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, and Narowal. The PMD has advised residents in these areas to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
Flooding Risks and Landslide Warnings
The intense downpours may cause rivers and streams in the affected areas to overflow, increasing the risk of flash floods. Additionally, the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are at risk of landslides, which could disrupt traffic and pose a threat to local communities. The authorities have urged travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys to these regions until the weather stabilizes.
Rainfall and Temperature Records
In the last 24 hours, Islamabad recorded the highest rainfall at 113 mm, followed by Rawalpindi with 102 mm, and Narowal with 36 mm. Lahore, Sialkot, Chakwal, Murree, Jhelum, and several other cities also reported significant rainfall. Tharparkar in Sindh received 24 mm, while Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 10 mm of rain.
Regarding temperatures, the highest readings on Saturday were recorded in Nokundi at 46°C, Dalbandin at 45°C, and Chilas and Sibi at 44°C, indicating a continuing heatwave in some parts of the country despite the ongoing rain spells.
Precautionary Measures
The PMD has advised citizens to stay updated on the weather forecasts and follow safety guidelines to avoid any untoward incidents during the heavy rains. Authorities are on high alert, and emergency services are prepared to respond to any situation that may arise.
