Rawalpindi District Administration Launches Bicycle Commuting Initiative to Combat Smog
In a proactive move to address escalating smog levels in Rawalpindi, the district administration is stepping up its efforts to curb air pollution. Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema has proposed a novel approach, suggesting a pilot project that encourages government employees to embrace bicycle commuting.
The district administration plans to kick off this initiative by selecting five to ten employees from each government office to regularly commute to work using bicycles. The focus will be on younger government employees, aiming to promote their well-being while discouraging the use of cars and motorcycles for daily commuting.
Awareness Campaign through Cycle Rally:
As part of the project, a cycle rally will be organize to raise awareness about combating smog and air pollution. The goal is to reduce overall vehicular traffic by promoting bicycle usage and establishing bike-friendly streets, ultimately contributing to improved air quality.
While promoting sustainable commuting, the district administration continues its strict operation against smoke-emitting vehicles, industrial units, and brick kilns. Fifteen industrial units already faced penalties totaling Rs 0.9 million, and 30 brick kilns have fined Rs 350,000, with two facing closure due to environmental impact. Over 3,370 vehicles have received challans for emissions, resulting in fines of Rs 1.928 million.
Deputy Commissioner Cheema emphasized that stringent accountability measures would be enforce without exceptions, underlining the commitment to combat air pollution at its source.
Cheema highlighted the expected benefits of these measures, including cost savings, improved public health, and a substantial reduction in air pollution. The initiative aligns with broader environmental goals and contributes to a healthier and more sustainable community.
Future Plans for Eco-Friendly Transportation:
Ibrahim Hasan Murad, the provincial caretaker transport minister, announced plans to introduce electric bikes as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative. Government employees may access electric bikes through leasing arrangements, promoting a shift towards environmentally conscious transportation.
