Road Cutting and Digging Ban in Karachi Amid Rising Accidents and Pollution

The Karachi Commissioner has prohibited excavations and road cutting within the city for the next two months to curb the increasing number ofaccidents. This new order is in the wake of frequent breaches of old rule. Every utility agency and individual is now required to obtain a high level government approval before any road or footpath is dug as a guarantee of safety to the people.

Utility agencies have been digging up roads for months to lay cables and pipes. This constant excavation has caused a spike in traffic accidents. While a ban existed before, people kept ignoring it. Now, the government is using Section 144 to enforce the rule.

If any department needs to dig, they can’t just start. The new notification requires prior permission from both the city and the Sindh government. This covers every street and footpath in Karachi. No individual or department is exempt from this rule for the next sixty days.
