Punjab, the most populous province of Pakistan, also has the highest electricity consumption. Recently, skyrocketing electricity bills have caused significant concern among consumers. In response, the Punjab government has introduced the Roshan Gharana scheme to help alleviate the burden of high electricity costs.
Roshan Gharana Scheme: Free Solar Panels for Households
The Punjab government approved the Roshan Gharana scheme during the 11th provincial cabinet meeting. Under this initiative, 4.5 million households will initially be provided with solar systems on easy installments. The government aims to assess each household’s electricity consumption to determine eligibility for free solar panels.
Free Solar Panels for Low Consumption:
- Households using up to 200 units will receive free solar panels from the government.
- Those using between 200 and 500 units will be offered interest-free loans.
- Consumers using more than 500 units will receive 75% government-subsidized, interest-free loans.
How Much Power Will Each Household Receive from Roshan Gharana Program?
The power allocation under the Roshan Gharana scheme is based on monthly electricity consumption:
- Up to 50 Units: 500-watt solar system
- 50 to 100 Units: 1-kilowatt solar system
- 200 to 300 Units: 1100-watt solar system
- 300 to 400 Units: 1650-watt solar system
- 500 Units: 2200-watt solar system
Registration Process for Roshan Gharana Program
To register for the Roshan Gharana scheme, consumers must send their ID card number and the reference number on their electricity bill to 8800. This will complete the registration process. The selection of households for the solar system will be done through a draw.
Roshan Gharana Program Installment Plan
Consumers will pay 25% of the solar system’s cost initially via the Bank of Punjab and National Bank, with no interest charged. The remaining cost will be spread over five years, included in their electricity bills.
Eligibility Criteria for Roshan Gharana Solar Systems
Installation will be handled by government-registered companies starting in September or October. The scheme is open to households with:
- Electricity consumption up to 500 units per year
- A single electricity meter
- A filer status, as non-filers will not be accepted
Who Won’t Benefit from Roshan Gharana Scheme?
Certain households are excluded from the Roshan Gharana scheme:
- Beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Program or other government aid programs
- Consumers involved in electricity theft. The government will verify through reference and ID card numbers to ensure no FIRs for electricity theft are registered against the consumer.
Roshan Gharana: A Step Towards Sustainable Energy in Punjab
The Roshan Gharana scheme represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in Punjab. By providing free or subsidized solar panels, the Punjab government aims to reduce electricity bills and promote the use of renewable energy among its citizens.
