LAHORE: Accountability Court has approved 14-days physical remand of PML-N leader Engineer Qamarul Islam in Saaf Pani Corruption case.
NAB had arrested both CEOs of Saaf Pani Company, Engineer Qamarul Islam and Waseem Ajmal yesterday in Lahore. Both were brought before the Accountability Court today in the Saaf Pani Corruption case.
During the hearing, Qamarul Islam’s lawyer argued that NAB charged his client over baseless allegations. He added that NAB does not hold proof against his client and no one has lodged a complaint against him in NAB either. He also said that his client is contesting elections in the upcoming polls and this can be seen as political victimization against him.
Qamarul Islam is the PML-N ticket holder from the constituency NA-59 Rawalpindi-III and is contesting against Chaudry Nisar. The PML-N leader is accused of giving 84 water treatment plants contracts at a higher price. Court has also indicted Waseem Ajmal in the same case.
Later Waseem Ajmal told the court he had cooperated with NAB and provided all documents. He said that he was employed by the government for a long period of 25 years. However, after refusing to follow instructions from provincial chief minister, he had been demoted to Officer on Special Duty.
Ajmal told court he had awarded new contracts only after the previous projects were finished ahead of time. He lamented that he was removed from position for giving contracts only on the basis of merit.
NAB Prosecutor requested the Accountability Court judge to hand over the accused over 15 day physical remand to the anti-graft body.
Court had reserved its verdict and later announced permission to hold the accused in remand for 14 days.
