Section 144 Imposed in Punjab: Only Khutbah and Azaan Allowed

The Punjab government has enforced Section 144 across the province for 10 days to maintain law and order and prevent any disturbance to public peace. According to the Punjab Home Department, the decision taken after reviewing the current security situation and potential threats to public gatherings and movement.

Under the implementation of Section 144, public gatherings, rallies, processions, and sit-ins restricted for the specified period. The display of weapons banned throughout the province to avoid any disruption in public order. The use of loudspeakers allowed only for Azaan and Friday sermons.

The Home Department’s notification stated that these steps aim to prevent any situation that could disturb public safety or create unrest in the province. The order applies to all major cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Faisalabad.

The law enforcement agencies and police have been intensifying patrols and putting up checkpoints in sensitive areas to enforce the compliance with the Section 144 orders. They have installed surveillance cameras, mobile units and security checkpoints at entry and exit points of major districts.

Moreover, some regions have enacted some movement and publicity restrictions on temporary basis to control crowds. Local governments have instructed civilians to cooperate with the security agents and to stay away during the enforcement process with unnecessary gatherings.

The order of Section 144 will be applicable until 10 days unless the Punjab government decides to extend it. Anything that can influence the peace or safety of the people is to be avoided during this period. The only exemptions provided are on religious duties like prayers, funerals, and governmental official events.

Citizens advised to remain informed and follow the government instructions to stay safe. The provincial governments have made clear that these preventive measures are only temporary and will be removed after the security situation has been improved.
