In a groundbreaking move toward gender equality and enhanced safety measures, the Sindh government has taken a significant stride by announcing a revolutionary project: women-only pink buses to exclusively operated by female drivers.
The latest development comes as part of the government’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and security for female commuters. To ensure the seamless implementation of this flagship project, the Sindh Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, greenlit an innovative approach during the 10th board meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA).
Central to this initiative is the strategic training of women to take on the role of bus drivers. The government has unveiled special training programs tailored to equip women with the necessary skills to confidently navigate and manage buses. Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized that beyond the realm of promoting gender parity, the inclusion of female drivers will establish a heightened sense of safety and reassurance for women passengers.

Another significant topic of discussion during the meeting was the potential provision of subsidies for the People’s Bus Service, following a resounding approval from the provincial cabinet.
Delving into the future, the board deliberated the feasibility studies for the second phase of the People’s Bus Service. Envisioned enhancements comprise the incorporation of an impressive fleet of 500 buses and the introduction of an environmentally conscious electric taxi service.
Minister Memon confidently asserted that the forthcoming implementation of the second phase poised to alleviate the travel woes of the populace, ushering in a renewed sense of relief and convenience.
Notably, the minister also highlighted the introduction of an eco-friendly electric taxi service as a dual-impact innovation. This forward-thinking service not only promises a positive environmental footprint but also holds the potential to open doors to fresh employment opportunities.
Karachi, the bustling metropolis, witnessed the maiden voyage of the country’s first-ever women-only bus service earlier this year in February. Commencing with eight dedicated buses traversing from Malir to Tower, the initial phase saw minimal fares ensuring affordability for all.
These buses, boasting a capacity of 50 seats each, with two reserved for special women passengers, have complemented by female hostesses, adding an extra layer of comfort and convenience.
During the inaugural ceremony, Minister Memon conveyed that while the Pink Bus Service initiated with a modest fleet of eight buses, expansion plans are already in the pipeline. The service’s footprint set to expand, enveloping diverse corners of Karachi and extending its reach to other regions within Sindh.
