In a significant step towards sustainable urban transport, Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Minister Sharjeel Memon announced the launch of a new electric bus service in Karachi. Commencing operations on Monday, the service covers an 18-kilometer route, offering eco-friendly transportation options to the city’s residents.
The first route, stretching from Malir Cantt’s checkpost number five to M. A. Jinnah Road, follows a path through key locations such as Safoora Chowrangi, Kamran Chowrangi, Millennium Shopping Mall, Dalmia, Agha Khan Hospital, and Numaish. The second route connects Bahria Town to Malir Halt, passing through M9 Toll Plaza, Baqai University, Jinnah Avenue, Malir Cantt, Tank Chowk, and Model Colony.
Operating under the People’s Bus Service banner, the electric bus fleet consists of 13 buses, emphasizing the government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting greener transport alternatives. Earlier in January, the government successfully launched its first electric bus route, which ran from Karachi Airport to Seaview.
With its initial success, the government is keen on further expanding the electric bus service to other regions within Sindh. However, the expansion plans will be driven by the demand and uptake of the service in these regions.
By integrating electric buses into its public transportation system, Karachi takes a promising stride towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. As these electric buses become more accessible and cater to a broader range of destinations, citizens can look forward to cleaner air and reduced environmental impact in the bustling metropolis.
