Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani has confirmed that 588 buildings in Karachi declared dangerous, with 456 located in District South and 107 in Lyari Quarters. The Sindh government will evacuate residents if necessary to save lives and relocate them to alternative housing.
In the aftermath of the recent Lyari building collapse that claimed 27 lives, Saeed Ghani stated that the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) Director, Deputy Director, building inspectors, and others responsible have been suspended. He acknowledged that various government departments are involved in illegal construction activities. Ghani said work is in progress to amend laws for stricter criminal action against builders, real estate agents, and buyers involved in illegal constructions. The law will be presented in the assembly soon.
According to Sindh government data, another seven-storey residential building in Lyari’s Agra Taj area, declared unfit for habitation in April 2025, has not yet been evacuated. Cracks have appeared, and around 10 families are still living there. Residents reported that the builder recently painted the building to make it look safe.

ABAD Chairman Hassan Bakhshi held the Sindh government responsible, saying that recommendations for building data collection, timely evacuations, and providing alternative housing have been ignored. He said ABAD is ready to support the government if it takes serious action on illegal construction in Karachi.
The Sindh government has not yet confirmed when the evacuation of these dangerous buildings in Karachi will begin. Meanwhile, authorities have been urged to take immediate action to prevent further incidents like the Lyari building tragedy.
