Sindh has adopted a new CNIC based number plates system based on linking of number plates with the CNIC of the owner and online number plate registration, NADRA based integration, and additionally, the regulation of the retention, transfer and verification of the plate numbers through the Sindh vehicle number plate check facility.
The Sindh government has officially approved the introduction of CNIC-based number plates in Sindh, linking vehicle registration numbers directly to the owner’s Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) instead of the vehicle’s chassis number.
How the System Works for CNIC-Based Number Plates in Sindh
Under the new CNIC-based number plates in Sindh model, personalised registration marks (PRMs) will remain with the vehicle owner. When a vehicle is sold, the Sindh vehicle number plate can be retained for another vehicle, transferred to a different owner, or surrendered to the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department. Any unclaimed PRMs will be auctioned or reissued.
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), based on the chassis number, will remain the permanent identifier in the official record.
Sindh Vehicle Number Plate Check and NADRA Integration
The new system shall be linked to the NADRA database to enable checking the Sindh vehicle number plate in real time to enhance law enforcement, tax compliance, as well as verification of ownership. This integration will also facilitate the transfer of ownership of the vehicle in Sindh and the history of registration.
Sindh Number Plate Online Apply Process
In the new rollout, Sindh Excise Department will launch a Sindh number plate online apply feature which will allow individuals with machines to bid, renew or transfer plates online via official portal. The move will help minimize delays and even remove the necessity of the physical visits.
The Sindh cabinet has instructed the Excise Department to prepare legal amendments to support the new system. A pilot launch will be carried out before full-scale implementation, similar to CNIC-based number plate systems in Islamabad and other parts of Pakistan.
SOPs will also be issued for seized vehicles in Sindh and those with altered chassis numbers. These vehicles will be registered under special non-transferable number series such as GPY/GPZ (federal) and GSY/GSZ (provincial).
Ajrak Design Number Plates and Security Features
Early in the year 2025, the government enforced the use of Sindh ajrak number plate containing holograph, barcode, and security threads to use. In the quest to enhance surveillance and road safety, there was the Safe City Project and all the vehicle owners had to replace their old plates.
