In response to a growing backlog in delivering physical vehicle registration cards, the Punjab Excise Department is set to revolutionize its processes. The department is embracing a digital transformation to introduce virtual smart cards, aiming to streamline the vehicle registration system across the province.
Challenges Faced by Excise Department
Previously, the Excise Department struggled to issue new physical cards, issuing over 80,000 registration cards before a temporary extension concluded. Despite issuing a late tender to prevent a standstill, progress has been slow beyond the technical bid phase. Currently, the department faces a daunting backlog of 2.5 million number plates.
Cost Surge and Exchange Rate Impact
Compounding the issue, the cost of smart registration cards for cars and motorbikes is set to substantially increase. This surge is linked to the remarkable rise in the US dollar’s exchange rate against the Pakistani Rupee, surpassing Rs. 280 compared to the 2018 valuation of Rs. 140.
Digital Solution on the Horizon
To address these challenges, the Excise Department is considering a forward-thinking alternative – virtual smart cards. These digital counterparts to traditional physical cards can be obtained online, offering a solution to the delay issue. A summary has already been submitted to the provincial government for approval, and upon consent, the digital solution will be swiftly implemented.
Efficient Online Registration Process
With virtual smart cards, citizens will be able to complete their vehicle registration entirely online. The Excise Department’s website will host downloadable cards, providing easy access for all vehicle owners in the province.
Doorstep Service for Enhanced Convenience
In a further effort to enhance convenience, the Excise Department has launched a doorstep service for vehicle registration. By dialing the Punjab Information Technology Board’s helpline 080008786, citizens can request the service, allowing a department representative to arrive at their location and complete the registration process on the spot.
This innovative approach marks a significant leap forward, ensuring a more efficient and accessible vehicle registration process for the citizens of Punjab. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking digital transformation.
