Smog Crisis: Lahore High Court Declares Saturday a Holiday in Punjab

Lahore High Court Mandates Saturday a Holiday in Punjab Amidst Escalating Smog Crisis

In response to the annual smog crisis, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered Saturday to be a holiday in smog-affected areas of Punjab, directing the government to close all schools and colleges on that day. This decision comes as smog levels, particularly in Lahore, have reached alarming heights, earning the city the dubious title of the most polluted in the world.

During a recent hearing on air pollution control measures, Justice Shahid Karim criticized the Lahore commissioner for the ineffective management of smog, which typically worsens during winter months due to various factors. Despite previous measures such as school closures, the situation has not improved, prompting the court to take additional steps.

To raise awareness about smog and its effects, the court recommended practical measures, including promoting cycling and public transport. The court advised the Punjab government to procure electric bikes for government staff, emphasizing the health and environmental benefits of cycling.

In line with efforts to combat smog, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued an advisory for Punjab residents, highlighting the importance of wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities, and staying hydrated to reduce health risks associated with smog.

Earlier measures implemented by the Punjab government included a smart lockdown in five districts from November 10 to 12, encompassing the closure of offices, markets, entertainment venues, wedding halls, and cinemas. The burning of crop residues and garbage, significant contributors to smog, has been strictly prohibited.

The court’s directives also include a work-from-home policy for two days a week, aiming to address both smog and traffic congestion issues. The hearing on measures to combat air pollution is set to resume on Wednesday as authorities seek comprehensive solutions to the persistent smog problem in the region.
