Social Media Ban During 6th to 11th Muharram: What You Need to Know

Punjab government has announced the suspension of all social media platforms across the province from the 6th to the 11th of Muharram. This step aims to curb sectarian violence, hate speech, rumors, and misinformation during the holy period of Muharram.

This decision emerged from a high-level meeting of the Punjab Cabinet’s Standing Committee on Law and Order. The committee convened to discuss the security and administrative measures required to ensure peace during Muharram. According to documents obtained by “Jang,” the committee stressed the need for proactive steps to maintain order and prevent any disruptions.

In a letter from the Punjab Home Department to the Federal Interior Secretary, it was confirmed that services of major social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok will be suspended in Punjab from the 6th to the 11th of Muharram. The letter highlights the concern over the potential spread of harmful content that could disturb the peace.

Furthermore, the Punjab Home Department has communicated this decision to the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the Inspector General of Punjab Police, and other key officials in the Special Branch and Counter Terrorism Department.
