The Earthquake News and Research Center, a private seismic research organization, has issued a strong warning of a possible major earthquake in Karachi this week. According to the center’s CEO, Muhammad Shehbaz Laghari, the recent minor tremors in Karachi should not be ignored as they could be a precursor to a stronger earthquake between Thursday night and Saturday night.
Speaking at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Islamabad, Laghari emphasized the need for urgent attention and precautionary measures. “Small earthquakes can reduce the chances of larger ones, but they can also be warning signs,” he explained.
Earthquake Alert for Karachi: Center Urges Government Cooperation
The Earthquake News and Research Center claims to be the world’s first early earthquake warning research facility, with recorded evidence available on their YouTube channel, EQQN. Laghari mentioned that the center often faces criticism for creating panic, but their primary aim is to alert the public and authorities in advance so safety steps can be taken.
He also expressed concern over lack of support within Pakistan. “We are being discouraged from working in our own country, while international institutions are offering collaboration opportunities,” said Laghari. He added that with proper government support, a reliable earthquake early warning system could be developed, potentially earning Pakistan significant foreign exchange and global recognition.
Karachi Earthquake Risk: Possible Major Quake Between Thursday and Saturday
Laghari warned that without cooperation from the government, his team may be forced to work with other countries to develop the necessary equipment and systems. This, he stressed, would be a missed opportunity for Pakistan.
The center is urging authorities and the public in Karachi to remain alert over the coming days, particularly from Thursday night to Saturday night, as the risk of a high-magnitude earthquake remains.
