Supreme Court Summons Sugar Mill Owners Over Non-Payment Case


ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court is going to hear a case regarding non-payment of price to sugarcane farmers today. Supreme Court has summoned owners of the sugar mills over the case.

A three-member bench of Supreme Court, which was led by CJP Saqib Nisar, heard a suo motu case on April 24 regarding non-payment of sugarcane price to farmers. In the hearing the court ordered that the owners of the sugar mills be present in the next hearing which is to be today.

During a hearing on February 19, sugarcane farmers told the Supreme Court that the sugar cane mills owners were not buying sugarcane at the Government issued rate of Rs180 per 40 Kg. Instead they were buying it for Rs120 or Rs140, while making the farmers sign that it was being bought at Rs180.

While speaking at a meeting, the National Food Security and Research Minister Sikandar Hayat Bosan had said that only one or two sugar mill was paying the farmers the government issued price of Rs180 per 40kg while the rest were not.
