Tarbela Power Plant Fault Causes Blackouts in Punjab and KP


ISLAMABAD: A fault at the Tarbela power plant early today has caused power outage in most of Punjab and KP.

The technical difficulties have caused blackouts in Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur and other cities in Punjab. It is also affecting Peshawar, Swat and Lakki Marwat and many cities of KP as well.

Technical teams have reached the power plant with the secretary of the Power Division, to start work on the fault immediately.

No time has been announced as to when the repairs are expected to finish, however; earlier faults at the same power plant are said to have taken more than 8 to 9 hours to fix.

A spokesperson to the Ato mic Energy Commission has stated that the tripping of lines from the Tarbela power plant caused all four Chashma Nuclear Power Plants to trip as well. This will cause further shortfall of electricity and blackouts are expected to range further in the cities of the country.

A spokesperson from Power Division had stated that the present power demand of the country is around 20,000 megawatts.

The spokesperson also said that starting today industrial sector of Punjab will also face 10 hours of load shedding.

Taking notice of the move All Pakistan Textile Mills Association has announced protests. They have said that 10 hours of load shedding will cause major setback to the work performance of the industry. He said it will cause a huge loss to the sector.

The association has issued a statement that it will meet the finance minister first regarding this announcement of the Power Division. It further stated that after meeting the minister they will announce the future course of action.
