Three Times First Lady of Pakistan: Kulsoom Nawaz

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was born in 1950. She had the honour of serving as the first lady thrice in her lifetime.

Her family was known for wrestling. She was the granddaughter of Ghulam Muhammad, who was known as “Gaama Pehelwan.”

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz received her early education at Madrassa-Tul-Banat. Later, she  completed her secondary education from Lady Griffin High School.

For her undergraduate studies, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz attended the Forman Christian College and then pursued a Masters degree at the Punjab University.

She got engaged to Mian Nawaz Sharif during her Masters programme. She married the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif in 1971.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz in Politics

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz did not actively participate in politics despite being married to Nawaz Sharif. However, she took interest in politics following the end of Nawaz Sharif’s second term as the Prime Minister.

She took out rallies in support for her husband Nawaz Sharif and campaigned for his release when he was put in jail after a coup by General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf in 1999.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz held the office of PML-N on an interim basis in June, 2000, for a period of two years only.

She addressed rallies, gathered workers, and tried to lead Karvan Tahafuz Pakistan rally against Pervez Musharraf, after which the military ruler put her under house arrest.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz Illness

Begum Kulsoom  was under treatment at London’s Harley Street Clinic since June 2017. She was diagnosed with lymphoma (throat) cancer in August 2017.

She was placed on life support earlier today as her health deteriorated last night.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz leaves behind daughters four children, Asma, Maryam, Hasan and Hussain.
