A devastating bus accident occurred in the Diamer district of Gilgit Baltistan on Friday, May 3, 2024. It claims the lives of at least 20 people and leaving 21 others injured. The passenger bus, which was traveling from Rawalpindi to Gilgit, veered off the Karakoram Highway and plummeted into a ravine in the Yashokhal area.
Rescue teams promptly dispatched to the site. The injured and deceased have shifted to a hospital in Chilas. According to the Health Department Director, three women were among the fatalities. The Diamer Deputy Commissioner, Fayyaz Ahmed, reported that five injured passengers are in critical condition, and two have transferred to Gilgit city for further treatment.
The Diamer DC stated that the accident occurred 20 kilometers away from Chilas city, likely due to overspeeding or a sharp turn. Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and Gilgit Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan have expressed their condolences and grief over the loss of life, directing authorities to provide all possible medical aid to the injured. The GB government has imposed an emergency at Chilas hospital to manage the crisis.
