WASHINGTON: United States Department of States spokesperson said that US supports free and transparent elections in Pakistan.
The US supports free, fair, and transparent elections in Pakistan as it does in all the countries of the world. While talking to the reporters spokesperson for the US Department of State, Heather Nauert had said this during a press briefing.
She also said that US and other international allies supported implementation of 2017 electoral reforms law in Pakistan.
She added that this is the first time that the electoral reforms law will be put into effect in the upcoming elections. Heather Nauert said that US hopes the new electoral reforms law will help peaceful transfer of power to a democratically elected government.
The general elections 2018 are approved to be held on 25th of July as ruling government will step down on May 31. After the incumbent government steps down a caretaker cabinet under Justice (r) Nasir-ul-Mulk will take over. The caretaker setup will be charged with conducting free and fair elections.
Recently the relations between US and Pakistan have been tense as US had cut on its aid to Pakistan earlier on. Claiming that Pakistan can do more to fight terrorism, US suspended the aid of $2 billion. While Pakistan who has suffered the most in the war of terror is being accused of not doing enough against terrorists.
