Authorities declared a five-storey residential building in Gulistan-e-Johar’s Block 10 unsafe on Tuesday after cracks appeared and the ground floor began sinking. The complex, Yasir Terrace, consists of three buildings, with Blocks C and D affected.
Police confirmed that the two blocks together house nearly 60 flats with around 300 residents. Evacuation began immediately after deep cracks emerged across the walls and floors, while windows and balconies were damaged.
According to residents, heavy rains caused an adjacent nullah to overflow, and the resulting water seepage led to structural cracks overnight. Families were shifted to relatives’ homes or other apartments within the complex. Police and rescue officials supervised the evacuation process to ensure safety.
As per The News.com, teams from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) carried out a technical assessment of the structure. Later in the day, SBCA issued a sealing order for Tower D of Yasir Terrace, declaring it a “dangerous building” under the Sindh Building Control Ordinance 1979-82.
The order stated that the premises have been sealed and warned that any attempt to break the seal or re-enter would lead to prosecution under Section 19 of the ordinance. Residents were informed they could only reoccupy flats if SBCA gives clearance.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that 60 flats in the building were evacuated. He added that SBCA teams have been directed to carry out further inspection before any decision on reoccupation is taken.
