Fake Facebook Accounts Can Influence Pakistani Elections, Mark Zuckerberg


Washington: Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said that the fake Facebook accounts can affect elections in Pakistan and other countries. He appeared in front of the Congressional Committee members to address them about the latest data breach.

Mark Zuckerberg said that within the next few months, important elections would be held in Pakistan, India, Mexico, Hungary, and Brazil. He further added that we want to ensure that the integrity of those elections will remain protected. The current Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) government will complete its tenure on 31st May 2018.

Facebook’s Policy on Data Integrity

Mark Zuckerberg said that the company is working on advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. However, these tools will assist the company in the identification of fake accounts. He further added that we are planning to hire 20,000 people who will work on the content and security review. Mark promised that we will verify each entity and its political ads.

Mark Zuckerberg revealed that he has confidence in his team’s abilities. He said that since 2016 US Presidential Elections, we have a better track record during different elections. However, he was referring to the elections in Germany, France, and the Senate elections held in Alabama. Mark Zuckerberg said that between these three elections, we proactively removed several accounts that can become a cause of harm in elections.

A few months back, Facebook disclosed that some Russians tried to influence US Presidential Elections 2016. They utilized fake Facebook accounts for their unethical practices. US Federal Trade Commission is also investigating the possible violation by Facebook in the data breach scandal.
