Australia Withdraw Day-Night Test After India Refused to Play

SYDNEY: Australia is forced to scrap a day-night Test after India refused to play. The game will now be held in normal hours, cricket officials said on Tuesday.

The Adelaide Test match scheduled from 6th to 10th June 2018 was a pink-ball match. The Indian cricket team hesitated for playing under floodlights.

After hearing the verdict of Indian cricket, CA chief James Sutherland said in a statement, “We can confirm that we have received advice from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that it is not prepared to participate in a proposed day-night Test in Adelaide this summer. As a result, we can now confirm this Test match will be a day format.”

Day – night Test cricket is more television-friendly format. CA believes that it can grab the interest of numerous spectators. It is perhaps the only way to save the five-day version of the game. The most popular format of the game is Twenty20 format.

However, India does not agree to the idea of playing a pink ball match. The top-ranked team said that they didn´t want to play their first day-night Test during such a high-profile series.

BCCI administrator Vinod Rai earlier said, “Yes, it´s pretty clear that we are not playing a day-night Test in Australia, no doubt about it.”

The Australian cricket team on the other hand, has played four day-night Tests since 2015. Three of those matches were played in Adelaide. Australia was victorious in all of them.

India have not yet played a pink-ball Test. They are reluctant and scared to give the hosts any advantage as they seek a first Test series win in Australia.

Earlier in May, Sutherland told Australia’s SEN Radio, “I think everyone in world cricket knows that, to be frank, I think (India) want to come out here and beat us.”

According to Sutherland, Australia would still play a day-night Test against Sri Lanka in Brisbane in January 2019.

“We are committed to hosting at least one day-night Test each home summer as part of our continued focus to grow Test cricket,” he added.
