The ongoing Ali Tareen vs PCB dispute has intensified after Ali Tareen, owner of Multan Sultans, tore up a legal notice sent by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over alleged violations of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise agreement.
The PCB had issued the legal notice last month, accusing Ali Tareen of breaching contract clauses and making public statements critical of the board’s management. The notice warned that failure to issue a public apology could lead to termination of the Multan Sultans franchise and a potential ownership ban.
Ali Tareen responded by publishing a social media video that made a sarcastic apology and responded to the accusations. Ali Tareen, owner of Multan Sultan, said in the video that he was making constructive criticism and did not intend to do any damage to the reputation of the PSL. He concluded the video with tearing up the legal notice on camera, which showed tensions between franchise owners and the PCB.
The Ali Tareen vs PCB dispute has brought issues of transparency and communication into the PSL. It has been reported that the conflict started when Tareen said that the league was not very innovative and did not have a decision making process.
The Multan Sultans management later defended Tareen, saying his statements aimed to improve league standards. PCB officials, however, maintain that public criticism violates the PSL franchise code of conduct.
The problem has reached a critical stage when the two parties think over their further actions. Ali Tareen, Multan Sultan’s owner controversy is thought to affect the relationship between franchises and board of governance and overall governance model of the Pakistan Super League, as per industry analysts.
