India won the final of the Asia Cup 2025 by five wickets over Pakistan, however, the post-match awarding ceremony became a point of controversy after the Indian cricket team did not take the trophy offered to them as the winners by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi. The refusal came after a strained tournament that already had political and security problems between the two cricket boards.
India chased down Pakistan’s total of 146 runs, finishing at 150/5 with two balls remaining. Tilak Varma top-scored with an unbeaten 69 and named Player of the Match. This victory allowed India to retain the Asia Cup 2025 title.
According to BCCI officials, the team had formally informed the Asian Cricket Council that it would not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. The trophy and medals taken back to the ACC office without a formal presentation. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the decision was linked to political concerns and said the board will file a strong protest with the ICC over the incident.
Mohsin Naqvi remained on stage during the ceremony, presented the runner-up cheque to Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha, and later left with the trophy and medals. ACC officials confirmed that the trophy returned to their headquarters. After Naqvi’s exit, the Indian team came on stage for a group photo without the trophy or medals.
The BCCI plans to raise the matter with the ICC. It called it unacceptable that the winning team left without the Asia Cup trophy. Captain Suryakumar Yadav said it was the first time in his career a champion team did not get its prize.
The Asia Cup 2025 scandal may worsen tensions between the India and Pakistan cricket boards. Earlier, Indian players skipped handshakes and avoided standing together at the toss, adding to the tension.
